October 2026: Birds in the Bresse Bourguinonne (South Burgundy)

After a dry summer, September fortunately brings some green back to the garden. A few rain showers have visibly refreshed the grass, and various trees are laden with berries and nuts. This, of course, attracts a plethora of birds.

The result? A whopping 30 different bird species we spotted or heard.

Familiar visitors such as chaffinches and blue tits come and go, while robins are also seen more and more often. Blackbirds and starlings are especially busy in the grass early in the morning, looking for worms when the dew is still on the ground.

And then there are the surprises. Suddenly we hear a goldfinch and see a tawny owl flying silently between the treetops. Those are the moments you gladly take a moment to step outside and listen.

The great variety of plants and the old trees make the garden attractive for all kinds of birds. They find food, shelter, and plenty of places to nest there.

With the woodpeckers , it's all about a very different sound. The great spotted woodpecker drums at lightning speed on a dry branch, a nearly mechanical sound that echoes through the garden. And you often hear the green woodpecker before you see it: its call sounds like a loud laugh that rings out through the garden and the surrounding area.

Sound really adds an extra dimension to the garden. Even when the birds are high up in the leaves and you can't see them, you know they're there.

En daarvoor is Merlin een fantastische app. Even luisteren, en je weet wie er boven je hoofd zit.
